Once again, natural gas drillers and their lobbyists have prevailed on their many friends in the Republican-led legislature to kill a severance tax.

The Wolf administration removed a drilling tax from budget negotiations although a majority of Pennsylvanians are on record as supporting a tax on natural gas drilling, going all the way back to the Rendell and Corbett administrations.

This is a no-brainer: Drillers in Pennsylvania should pay their fair share as is the case in every other sizable natural gas producing state.

Since when did we become a charity for natural gas producers that only care about our state as long as the gas flows? The rest of us will pay the price for decades after they leave.

The leaders of the General Assembly appear to be stuck balancing the needs of campaign check-writing lobbyists whose clients harm public health and destroy our environment vs. the needs of average citizens. It's time to hold drillers accountable for their actions.
